A Caucasian man, Matt Trawick, smiles at the camera, wearing a white shirt and tie.

My name is Matt Trawick. My tenure as an educator in Lee County begin in 2003.  I started as an instructional aide, teaching GED test prep at Smiths Station High School for one year.  I spent 16 years at Sanford Middle School in Beauregard, teaching 7th and 8th Grade Social Studies.  In addition to teaching for 16 years, I spent 10 years coaching JV football, Girls Basketball, and Co-Ed Soccer.  I then moved into administration.  I served as Wacoochee Elementary School’s Assistant Principal for 3 years.

I believe in our mission that West Smiths Station Elementary School will facilitate a challenging environment which encourages optimal learning and builds a foundation for our students to become life long learners. Through multiple methods of instruction and evaluation our students will exhibit responsibility, respect, and good citizenship.  We will build positive self-concepts, and utilize the latest technology.  Furthermore, we will build cooperative relationships between school, community and home with the ultimate goal of helping our students become their best in all areas of life.

On behalf of Lee County Schools and our School’s remarkable hard-working faculty and staff, I am honored t serve as principal of West Smiths Station Elementary School. My goal is to make this school year the best yet! Thank you for being part of the West Smiths Station family. I look forward to serving alongside you all as we help make “West...the Best!”

Warm regards,
Mr. Matt Trawick

School Profile

School Environment

At West Smiths Station Elementary School we create a positive learning environment where learning thrives by ensuring every student feels safe, respected, and connected. We nurture curiosity, build character, and celebrate the unique potential within each child.  Furthermore, we build cooperative relationships with our families and within our community.

Community

We are located in the community of Smiths Station, Alabama in east central Alabama. Smiths Station is adjacent to Phenix City, Alabama; Columbus, Georgia; and the Fort Benning Military Facility.

The Smiths Station community has a legacy of working together to provide the best for our children.  Residents of all socioeconomic status and educational levels have worked side by side through the years to raise funds for needed items for the schools.  In recent years our community has moved from a small rural community to a much larger rural community.  Our community now includes a great percentage of families that do not have their roots in Smiths Station.  We have become more diverse, more transient, and more global.  While focusing on meeting the global needs of our community, we still cling to the roots in which we were established.
